                                       ORGANIZERS
Sue Muraya, who describes her own designs as modern classics and is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, partnered Moira Tremaine in establishing the Kenya Fashion Week to promote local fashion designers.

A measure of the event’s growing status was the sponsorship it attracted this year from The NATION Media Group, Beiersdorf East Africa manufacturers of the Nivea product brand, and Redd’s which sponsored the new category for best design students which was a fabulous success.

THE KENYA FASHION WEEK WAS NOT HELD AT THE SARIT CENTRE THIS YEAR

Kenya Fashion Week is a unique exhibition and trade fair that brings together the best design talents in the business and showcases their work in a series of spectacular fashion shows.

Launched in 2001, it was a first time Kenyan designers had been brought together en masse for a major fashion exhibition, and signaled an exciting new wave of creativity in the industry.

A record number of exhibitors attended this year’s Kenya Fashion Week in early June held in The Sarit Centre’s international exhibition hall -- a celebration of the best in modern African style.

Kenya Fashion Week 2003 has now presented the beautiful garments, jewelry, fabrics and accessories in an exclusive desk calendar (July 2003 to June 2004) available from
Kates Kikapu at US$ 35.00 plus courier shipping.

Our images are taken from the Kenya Fashion Week 2003 Diary to give you a taste of the glamorous world of Kenyan fashion design that is making London, Paris and New York sit up and take notice.

DESIGNERS
Leading clothing designers that presented collections during the Kenya Fashion Week included new and established names such as Sally Karogo of Macensal with a brilliant fusion of traditional African designs and modern suits made from coloured Maasai shuka fabric.

Deepa Singh lit up the catwalk with linens and silks in vibrant colours, in complete contrast to Carole Munene, whose aptly named label All Black displayed designs in sophisticated, minimalist black.

Kenialyn Creations from Mombasa, whose head designer Kenialyn Kahome trained at the American InterContinental University in Los Angeles provided an international flavour.

Fashion with a strong African influence made from unusual fabrics in a range of earthy colours came from Essential Fashions, African
Samwa Fashion and Sy-Lise Creations
and Betty Vanetti of the Wild Ones.

Funky, trendy designs for the young and young-at heart came from Anna Adero of Weddings and Denims and Peggy Onyango of Peon Glamour.

The label Loulou’s Creations was influenced by music culture and aimed at a radical look.
